A large area of ground that was rarely used and very neglected, was developed as a garden area in 2003 as a memorial to those pupils and staff who have died prematurely. This is used as an outdoor classroom, a study area and as an area for relaxation, particularly for senior pupils. This is a unique area of a type rarely to be found in schools.

The garden is in fact a series of smaller gardens linked together. These include a covered seating area that can be used for concerts, a memorial garden, an ancient garden with a stone circle, an amphitheatre seating area, a woodland garden with a willow wicker man and a Japanese style gravel garden.
The gardens contain a very large number of plant varieties including sub-tropical plants from Logan Botanic gardens and a collection of over 30 different Clematis. Furniture was commissioned from local craftsmen using hardwoods.
This project was made possible through the generous support of many local businesses, parents, teachers and pupils. The BBC's 'The Beechgrove Garden' helped with the design and finance of the gardens and other grants came from Scottish Natural Heritage, The Kirkcudbright Rotary Club, Kirkcudbright Common Good Fund, The School Board and many other donations.
